Who cares about calories? Restaurant menu labels don't work, study shows
Thu Jul 18, 2013
I often look at the nutrition labels as well as food allergy labels. I think labeling for food allergies is more important. However, today, I was at Einstein Bros and chose a whole wheat bagel thin with chicken salad so I could get a sandwich under 300 calories. I find it quite useful to know how ma …
From errand to crime: Parents now face hard consequences for leaving kids in car
Fri Jul 12, 2013
It is interesting that so many people are worried about the girl getting abducted. From the US Dept. of Justice statistics: During the study year, there were an estimated 115 stereotypical kidnappings, defined as abductions perpetrated by a stranger or slight acquaintance and involving a child …
Cruel or necessary? The true cost of wild horse roundups
Tue May 14, 2013
Seriously, horse meat is very tasty. I've had it in Switzerland. Cooked it myself. A better option, however, is to limit the ranchers.
400-year-old marble loot revealed by drought in Poland
Fri Sep 21, 2012
The Swedes are quite poor sea faring souls. You should take a look at Vasa, which was a war ship built 400 years ago or so to invade Poland. I think it had something to do with who would be King of Sweden when the Swedish king died with no heirs except one nephew in Sweden and one in Poland who both …

Kids flying solo: What age is appropriate?
Thu Aug 16, 2012
I think if you are doing a direct flight, things should be OK. I mean, you take the child to the gate and watch them get on the plane. You aren't allowed to leave until the plane has been in the air at least 5-10 minutes. Then, the pick-up person picks them up at the gate on the other end. There is …
1940s housewife showed how to tame high grocery prices

3 adults, 1 child. But food allergies keep us from the cheap and easy stuff. It also includes non-food items, so hard to estimate.
Should hosts cater to restricted dieters?
Tue Jul 3, 2012
I do the same. Ahead of time, I ask the host to know their ingredients and later, I bring a spare sandwich in my purse just in case. Sometimes, I bring a dish I know I can eat. Lucky for me, I only carry an epi-pen for one of my allergies, but the rest are mostly avoidable.
Psst: asparagus pee. Are you in the club?

I can't believe only 1 in 5 produce and smell it. It's 3 out of 3 in my house!
Feds file lawsuit to get tyrannosaur skeleton sent back to Mongolia
Mon Jun 18, 2012
I just saw that Brachiosaurus fossil (I think). There's a very impressive specimen in Terminal B at O'Hare airport. I had a very long layover and just stared and stared. It was actually a replica of the fossils, but I'm pretty sure it's the same one as there was all this stuff about the field museum …
